Selous Game Reserve

Africa’s Largest Untamed Wilderness

Spanning over 45,000 square kilometres, Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa and one of the most important wilderness ecosystems on Earth. Together with Mozambique’s Niassa Reserve, it forms the Selous–Niassa ecosystem, an immense 155,000 sq km expanse of uninhabited miombo woodland that shelters a staggering variety of wildlife.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Selous remains one of East Africa’s least crowded and most pristine safari destinations. With just a handful of lodges spread across this vast wilderness, visitors experience an intimate, untamed Africa far removed from tourist crowds.

A Sanctuary of Wildlife

Selous Game Reserve - giraffes surrounding the Rufiji River

Selous boasts one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. During the dry season, thousands of elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and antelope converge on the life-giving water sources of the Rufiji River and its connected lakes. Predators are never far away, lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas patrol the floodplains, while the reserve is one of the best places in the world to see the endangered African wild dog in healthy numbers.

Unique to Selous are its distinctive lions, known for their darker coats, sparser manes, and opportunistic daytime hunting habits, making this one of the best places in Tanzania to witness a lion kill in action. Rare and endangered species such as black rhino, sable antelope, and roan antelope also roam freely here.

The Rufiji River & Lake System

The mighty Rufiji River is Tanzania’s largest waterway, flowing from west to east through the reserve. It is flanked by palm-fringed banks, dotted with five small lakes, and linked by narrow channels that create a rich wetland habitat. Boat safaris along the river are a highlight of any Selous visit, offering sightings of basking crocodiles, pods of hippos, elephants drinking at the water’s edge, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds.

With over 440 bird species recorded, Selous is a dream destination for birdwatchers. The reserve hosts both resident species and migratory visitors, including the yellow-billed stork, African skimmer, fish eagle, trumpeter hornbill, purple-crested turaco, and colourful bee-eaters. Along the riverbanks, palm-nut vultures and kingfishers thrive, while floodplains attract flocks of waders and plovers.

Why Visit Selous Game Reserve?

Selous offers Africa’s largest, wildest safari with rare wildlife, varied activities, and far fewer visitors than other major parks. Stay at least three nights to explore its beauty fully.

Best Time to Visit

The best wildlife viewing is in the dry season (June–February), when animals gather at water sources. Rainy months (March–May) limit access, and most lodges close.
