Katavi National Park

A True Untamed African Wilderness

Katavi National Park is isolated, untamed, and seldom visited, offering a rare glimpse of Africa as it existed a century ago. Tanzania’s third-largest national park, Katavi lies in the remote southwest of the country, within a truncated arm of the Rift Valley that ends at the vast, shallow expanse of Lake Rukwa. Its remoteness ensures an unparalleled wilderness experience for the few intrepid travelers who venture here.

The majority of Katavi is covered by hypnotic brachystegia woodland, a seemingly endless tangle of trees and shrubs that provides shelter to elusive wildlife such as localized populations of eland, sable, and roan antelopes. The park’s main game-viewing areas, however, are the Katuma River and the seasonal floodplains of Lakes Katavi and Chada. During the rainy season, these marshy lakes teem with a diverse array of waterbirds, hippos, and crocodiles.

Wildlife Spectacles

Katavi comes alive in the dry season, when retreating floodwaters concentrate animals around the Katuma River. The river becomes the only source of drinking water for miles, drawing astonishing congregations of wildlife. Here, visitors may witness up to 4,000 elephants, several herds of 1,000-plus buffalo, and abundant giraffes, zebras, impalas, and reedbucks. Lions and spotted hyenas converge on the floodplains, taking advantage of this extraordinary game concentration.

Hippo Behaviour

One of Katavi’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles is its hippos. Towards the end of the dry season, up to 200 hippos may gather in a single deep pool, creating a unique natural spectacle. Male hippos engage in bloody territorial battles, forcing defeated males to retreat into the open plains until they muster the strength to challenge again. Witnessing these encounters offers an unforgettable insight into the raw power and survival instincts of Katavi’s wildlife.
